Crushed Concrete

Crushed concrete, or recycled concrete aggregate (RCA), is an aggregate made from concrete that’s been crushed into smaller pieces. These sizes can range from coarse aggregate to small fines. Larger aggregates are great for drainage, while crushed concrete fines make great filler/sub-base material.

Some of the most common crushed concrete aggregates include:

22A Crushed Concrete

3/4" down to dust. Ideal for smoother driving surfaces, pathways, and grading.

21AA Crushed Concrete

1 1/2" down to dust. Ideal for driveway and parking lot base, walkways, paths, and drainage.

1" x 3" Crushed Concrete

Coarse aggregate. Ideal for retaining walls, erosion control, and driveway foundation.

Common Uses for Crushed Concrete

Base material for driveways and parking lots

Drainage and erosion control

Backfill for excavation

Landscaping, paths, and patios

Stabilizing embankments

Learn More About Crushed Concrete

Both crushed concrete and crushed asphalt are commonly used recycled materials in construction and landscaping applications. They have a few distinct differences when it comes to their characteristics, appearance, and preferred applications.

Characteristics:

  • Strength: Crushed concrete generally has higher compressive strength than crushed asphalt, making it suitable for applications requiring heavy load bearing, like sub-bases for roads and pavements.
  • Drainage: Both materials are permeable, allowing water to flow through them. However, crushed concrete is generally more permeable than crushed asphalt due to its irregular shape and gaps between pieces. This makes it ideal for drainage applications.
  • Aesthetics: Crushed concrete has a more natural and rustic look, while crushed asphalt has a darker, more uniform appearance.

Applications:

  • Crushed concrete is mostly used for:
    • Sub-base for roads and pavements
    • Driveways and parking lots (base layer or surface with proper maintenance)
    • Walkways and paths
    • Landscaping fill and grading
    • Drainage materials
  • Crushed asphalt is mostly used for:
    • Road patches and repairs
    • Driveway and parking lot surfaces (top layer)
    • Playgrounds and athletic tracks (mixed with other materials)
    • Landscaping accents

Crushed concrete is a budget-friendly, eco-friendly choice for your driveway, especially for low-traffic areas. It’s strong, permeable, and requires minimal maintenance. However, it may require larger aggregate sizes for heavier vehicles or high-traffic situations.

If you prefer a more polished look, install crushed concrete as a sub-base layer for your driveway, with your preferred surface material on top. Crushed concrete is a great sub-base layer because it allows water to drain through (reducing the potential for flooding) and uses less expensive material.

To figure out how much crushed concrete you need, you will need to calculate the volume of the space. Measure the area (length x width). If it’s irregularly shaped, divide it into rectangles or triangles. Then determine the depth of aggregate needed: This will depend on your intended use. Driveways may require 4-6 inches, while a walkway will require around 2-4 inches, and landscaping features might only require 1-2 inches.

Consider ordering slightly more than your calculated amount to account for shrinkage or unexpected needs.
